Emigration from Japan to the Dominican republic began in the 1950s during the regime of Rafael Trujillo, but the Japanese government's recruitment promises of grants of up to 18 hectares of good farmland and other incentives were not honored. There was also friction between the Japanese immigrants and the local people. In 2006, the Japanese government formally apologized to the Japanese immigrants
